Anode rods sacrifice themselves to protect the tank. Once they are gone, the tank starts corroding. Annual maintenance catches the rod before it does, and flushes sediment that otherwise hardens into a heat-blocking layer at the tank bottom.

Tank water heater maintenance is simple but rarely done: check the anode, flush sediment, verify the temperature/pressure relief valve operates, inspect the gas connection. Skipping it cuts the tank life roughly in half.

Tankless water heaters need annual descaling, especially in Ottawa's mineral-heavy water. We connect a flush kit and circulate descaling solution through the heat exchanger.
