A geothermal heat pump uses the stable ground temperature (around 8°C in Ottawa, year-round) as its heat source in winter and heat sink in summer. The efficiency is unmatched: a coefficient of performance of 4 or more is typical, meaning the system delivers four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
Geothermal installs are not for every home. Drilling cost, lot size, and the upfront capital all push the decision toward homeowners with a long horizon. For most clients, an air-source heat pump hits 80% of the benefit at 30% of the cost.
