At the peak of summer, most of us turn to the AC to keep the home comfortable. What if you turn it on and you are met with silence instead of that familiar hum? Worry not. Here are the most common reasons, in order of how easy each is to fix yourself.
1. Start with the thermostat
Often the simplest answer is the right one.
Symptom. The AC does not respond when you expect it to.
Fix. Ensure the thermostat is on, set to "cool," and at a temperature lower than the current room temperature. If digital, check it has power. Try replacing the batteries.
2. Check the circuit breaker
A simple electrical hiccup is sometimes the culprit.
Symptom. The unit does not power up at all.
Fix. Check the electrical panel. Reset the breaker if it has tripped. If it trips again, phone us. Repeated trips signal a deeper electrical issue.
3. Dirty air filter
The often-neglected part that can wreak havoc.
Symptom. Restricted airflow or none at all.
Fix. Locate and inspect the filter. Clean or replace if dirty.
4. Condensate drain line
Modern AC units have safety mechanisms that prevent damage.
Symptom. The unit seems healthy but refuses to start.
Fix. A blocked condensate drain line trips the float switch, which prevents the unit from running. Clearing the blockage solves it.
5. Outdoor unit obstructions
The outdoor unit's health is crucial for overall performance.
Symptom. Indoor unit seems fine, but no cooling.
Fix. Ensure the outdoor unit is free from debris. Clear airflow is essential. Verify exhaust paths are not blocked.
6. The capacitor
Essential for starting the motors.
Symptom. Everything seems in order, the unit stays silent.
Fix. Capacitor issues need a technician. The components carry stored charge and are not safe to handle without training.
7. Refrigerant levels
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the system.
Symptom. Lack of cooling despite the system running.
Fix. Frost on the visible refrigerant lines indicates a refrigerant problem. Not a DIY job. Phone for service.
8. Motor or compressor
The core components.
Symptom. The AC stays unresponsive after the easier checks.
Fix. Faulty motor or compressor requires professional service. These are complex components requiring proper diagnostics.
